In Remembrance
Luke 22:19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and broke it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
I wasn't there when Jesus passed the bread.
I wasn't there to recieve that cup of wine.
But I remember Jesus.
I remember him coming to a scared nine year old kid, surrounded by men expecting me to do something. I would have if I could, really I would.
But I remember Jesus, he had already done what I could not. He came into me and washed me clean, clean of the fear, clean of my sins. And I remember Jesus, because he has never left me, no, not even once!
So when I take communion I can honestly say, Jesus, I remember you today.

Re: In Remembrance
communion is a somber and humble time, we should remember every day what Christ did for us, but a communion service is special

Re: In Remembrance
We do the Lords supper every sunday. My church believes it is to be done every first day of the week. That is done with bible reference from the early christians in acts 20:7 and acts 2:42 check it out
--- Because strait is the gate and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life and few there be that find it.

Re: In Remembrance
Hi Pastor et al,Hope you don't mind my jumping into this discussion.
(nice board by the way.did a gr8 job here).
Probably going to take a look at several passages here too. If this seems to jump off topic it's not if you can bear with this patiently.
First this:
the word for remembrance in Greek is anamnesis. It means a remembering that makes something past become present.Second,Jesus says This IS.
Jesus is God.His words are efficacious. Now if we go back to John 6 we read Jesus discourse on the Bread of Life. Jesus says, unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood you have no life in you.At this point Jesus loses some of His disciples. Evidently they cannot accept thie particular teaching.
Now Jesus later says that we must abide in Him.How do we abide in Him.In John 6 Jesus tells us how we are to abide in him.Now i'm going to jump back to their obsevance of Passover-what we refer to as the Last Supper.
John's gospel does not include the observance BUT the backdrop of all of John's gospel ironically IS the Passover.Further John is the ONLY apostle who is an eyewitness to the passion and death of Jesus.
However, when we read the gospel accounts of this Passover observance this stands out;it is the ONLY time Jesus refers to the New Covenant.
That's not all that stands out though.
'This is my blood of the new covenant which is poured out for many.'Then Jesus says; "Truly I say to you, I shall not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God." And then, when they had sung a hymn, they went out into the night to the Mount of Olives.
However,if you follow the Passover observance there is something significantly missing here. You sing the Great Hillel(our word Halleluah comes from this-it literally means praise God or Praise Yahweh). After you sing this you partake of the 4th cup.
They sing the Great Hillel and LEAVE.
No 4th cup.
Now we go to the Garden. What does Jesus pray?
If you pick it up there then i'll come back and we'll take a look at John's eyewitness accoutn of the passion and death of Jesus and then we'll jump back to the Passover.
This may seem all over the place but i promise-it will all tie into what i am going to suggest.Feel free to point out anything i may have missed or add any comments.
GBU,

Re: In Remembrance
Go ahead and jump in praying4patience, Pastor Rick loves this kind of stuff (ok, I'll admit it, I like it to)
But before it gets to deep, would everyone admit that the Lord's Supper is an ordinance of the church? We might disagree on how it is done or what Jesus was doing when he started it but ones things gotta be true. Jesus wants us to do it!

Re: In Remembrance
thank you James and as long as you've jumped in here have a few questions before we go back to the gospel of John.Maybe you'll want to answer these.
John 15:4 (King James Version)
(Jesus speaking here)
4Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine
; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
Where in scripture does Jesus say (teach)how we are to abide in Him.Looking for the verse here.
The next question is when they sing the Great Hillel and go to the Garden what does Jesus pray for?
You can quote the scripture here.
Then we'll go back to John's eyewitness account and John 6 both.
