Josh 9:20-23

Joshua 9:20-23
KJV 20 This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them. 21 And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them. 22 And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us? 23 Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

Joshua 9:20-23 Knox Bible

20 Only one way is left; we must keep them alive, so as not to provoke the Lord’s anger by forswearing ourselves,

21 but they must live to hew wood and draw water for the needs of our company. Such was the voice they gave;

22 and thereupon Josue summoned the Gabaonites into his presence. What means this trick you have played on us, he asked, telling us you lived far away, when you are in truth our near neighbours?

23 You shall lie under a ban; it shall ever be men of your race that hew wood and draw water for the house of the God whom I serve.

These are my thoughts, please share yours.

20 We only have one Way and He is Jesus any other way we fall to our sins and die in the flesh but with Him we can overcome our own flesh because He will change us. They realized they couldn’t harm these people because of the treaty they were tricked into making. Sometimes we may foolish commitments this does not mean God wants us to break them because often times we need to keep them.

21 They were going to make the best of the situation by making them into their servants. When similar things happen to us, us being tricked or making foolish decisions that the Lord still wants us to keep then we need to make the best of the situation. Sometimes life bring hard things and all we can do is trust God and keep going making the best of the situation.

22 Joshua questions them, why they would come to him at this point seems strange but there was no threat of harm.

23 Joshua puts this curse on them that they will do work for the Lord. Working for the Lord isn’t a curse to us but a blessing but if we were forced to work for idols then it would be an because they served idols then for them to work for the Lord that they didn’t know would be a curse and not a blessing.
