Foot washing?

I went to church in this little church sunday while on a layover and got a shock. I walked in and they said they were going to observe the church ordinance of "foot washing." I have never had this happen to me before and was wondering if there is such a thing and where did it come from?

I don't always trust Wikipedia, but they have an article about foot-washing.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foot_washing
It certainly makes for a good object lesson.

Hi James, there is indeed a practice of footwashing. It is not a church ordinance but it is a practice of humilty by example.

So how do you know what is and what isn't a ordinance for the church?

You should read the New Testament. This will teach you the churches ordinances. I asumme ordinances is like laws.
Foot washing was done by Jesus to the apostles. There is no further mention of this in the New Testament or by the New Testament church. You know when you think about this did Jesus need to be taught humilty? I think not, so there must have been another reason why he did this. Maybe it was more to show his compassion towards man. emoticon

I believe Jesus washed the deciples feet as an example for us to follow. Just about everything Jesus did He did to show us how to be like Him. We need to show humility toward one another.

there are only two (2) Ordinances in the Bible, 1. Baptism 2. The Lord's Supper.

Anything else is heresy and not given for ordinances, it may be a preference or a church by law but not and Bible Ordinance.

Greetings Barbara and welcome to It's The Bible's Christian Message Board. I do hope we made a good first impression and that you will come back soon and often. I do have one small request though... if it isn't to much trouble could you take the "administrator" title off of your signature while you are on my board? I don't want anyone to be confused...

Thanks,

This was an example to us of being a servant. It's pretty clear in the scripture below.

(Joh 13:15)
For I have given you an example, so that you may do as I have done to you.

(Joh 13:16)
Truly, truly I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, and a messenger is not greater than the one who sent him.
=======
(Mar 9:35)
So he sat down and called the twelve. He told them, "If anyone wants to be first he must be last of all and servant of all."
