Tithes and Offerings

Ok, in Pastor Ricks church he says,

You know where the offering plate is at so do what you and God decided

or at least words to that effect...

So do we tithe today or just do offerings?

Re: Tithes and Offerings

Hi James,

I was hoping someone else would post on this since you already mentioned what I say. Ah well, I base my practice on:

1 Corinthians 16:1-2 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye.
Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

The teaching of Paul is fairly clear, we should already have our offering prepared and no offering should be taken based on anything I may say or do on that Sunday. If you want a number then in the Old Testament a tithe of goods was 10% but if you wanted to give money instead of goods then it was 12%! Also, in the Old Testament a offering was 1/60th (or 1.66%).

So if you have never ever tithed prior to this and you just want a number to start with see if you can agree with God to give 1.66% of your gross income and be happy about itemoticon

Re: Tithes and Offerings

This is a subject that many Pastors and people like to stay away from because it can be so controversial. I agree with you Pastor Rick about the per centages but I do say and do something a little different.
Basically this is what I say about tithing or giving. GOD does not want your money or your goods. What HE really wants is you. Yes the bible makes reference to the 10% but it is to be 10% of your increase each year. This means that if you are increasing in anything then you should give the 10% of it. Now what can increase for you? How about your income, that is a good one but how about your time? After all we all get another year each year that we live so how about giving GOD 10% of that year.
Look a year has 365 days, 24 hours in a day,60 minutes in every hour and 60 seconds every minute. that is 315,360,000 seconds in a year! 10% of that is 3,153,600 seconds or that is 52,560 minutes in a year. That means that we should give 1,010.77 minutes a week to GOD! That is 16.85 hours a week for our service to GOD.
So I ask how many of you are giving 16 hours or more each week to serve GOD?

Now to answer your original question, our church does not pass the plate. We have an offering basket sitting by the door. All the members know where it is and put their Tithes and Offerings in it and the visitors can see what they are doing and if they wish to put something in it then that's ok with us.

MAY GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU!!! emoticon

Actually after posting this I realized that my last statement wasn't true because that is not the question that you asked. I think most people consider their offerings as their tithes and so I would say they are tithing. But are they giving 10 or 12 per cent? Who knows but them and GOD. I don't believe there are very many churches that do what my Dad's Church did when I was a kid. They had you give them a copy of your Income Tax statement each year and you signed an agreement to give 10% of that amount during the next year. You were to divide it up and give one twelth each month. If you fell behind or didn't do it they would send you a statement or bill each month.
I just don't believe there are any places left like that today!

I left a church that did that because I felt like the way they were treating it was kinda like "Gods Collection Agency." To much of the worlds way of doing things in my eyes. Shouldn't Gods way be better?

I had a Pastor once who stated that tithing is 10% while offerings are everything above that, thus our tithes and offerings. Anyway, Our church does pass the collection plate on Sundays, however, I rather like the idea of having the plates or baskets at the doors. Sometimes unchurched people who are visting or just starting to attend church and are not knowledgeable about tithing are put off by the collection plates. They may give, but only because they feel they have to. Not for the joy and blessing of simply giving back to the Lord.

I believe in th 10% tithe,
not just because of Malachi.
Many people believe that practice was just for the Jews under the law of Moses, yet Abraham and Jacob (who lived prior to the Law) gave tithes.

But I agree also,
that the collection plates should not be passed around as that pushes away new people.
but I would not put them in the doors, the best place to put it, I think, is in the altar (or near it)

Hi Peter emoticon

James pretty much summed up what we do but to be specific our offering plates are on the alter and we also have collection boxes in the foyer for those who are shy or nervous about coming up to the platform area. There is one box that is special though because donations placed in it go to support the widows and orphans.

Here's the way I think of giving. I think tithing is a principle found throughout Scripture, but I don't see tithing commanded in the new Testament. So I personally make it a goal to give 10 per cent, but I don't believe I am sinning if my giving is less. My youngest child was hospitalized twice in the past year, and I had to cut back on giving to meet some of the expenses, but I hope to get back up to 10 per cent as soon as possible.
